The recent decision by His Excellency, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to dissolve the appointments of political aides, particularly the Special Assistants (SAs) and Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), should be clearly understood as a bold political strategy and a well-calculated administrative reset aimed at strengthening governance in Ondo State.
Expectedly, this development has generated mixed reactions from the public. While some critics have chosen to view the decision from a negative perspective, those with a deeper understanding of governance and political dynamics recognize it as one of the most timely and impactful decisions taken by the Governor, especially in the aftermath of the APC National Congress. It reflects a deliberate effort to reposition the government for greater efficiency, inclusiveness, and effectiveness.
It is important to emphasize that this decision is not targeted at any individual or group. Rather, it is a sincere and strategic move to inject fresh energy, competence, and renewed commitment into the system. Governance requires periodic restructuring to ensure that the right people are in the right positions at the right time, and this action aligns perfectly with that principle.
One of the major benefits of this decision is that it creates an opportunity to broaden political participation across the state. Ondo State has 203 wards, and this restructuring provides a platform to ensure wider representation and inclusivity at the grassroots level. From a broader perspective, this kind of political restructuring is not new in Nigeria. Several progressive states such as Lagos, Ogun, and Kaduna have, at different times, undertaken similar exercises to rejig their administrative frameworks, improve service delivery, and strengthen political cohesion within the ruling party. These actions have often resulted in more responsive governance and stronger party structures.
For the APC government in Ondo State, this decision is highly beneficial. It helps to consolidate party unity, reduce internal grievances, and reposition the party for future political engagements. However, it is important to sound a note of caution.
