Former Zamfara governorship candidate, Sani Shinkafi, has threatened legal action against the All Progressives Congress over what he described as the imposition of a sole candidate for the party’s Zamfara North senatorial ticket.
Shinkafi alleged that Senator Sahabi Yau was unlawfully presented as the party’s consensus candidate without a proper primary election or credible consensus arrangement.
In a petition addressed to the APC National Chairman, he accused influential political actors within Zamfara State of manipulating the selection process and sidelining other aspirants.
He argued that the process violated the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and the APC constitution, insisting that no valid democratic primary was conducted.
According to him, aspirants were allegedly intimidated and excluded from participation, while claims of a presidential directive asking contenders to step down for serving senators were never officially communicated to him.
Shinkafi maintained that he neither withdrew from the race nor signed any agreement endorsing a consensus arrangement.
He warned that the current situation risked repeating past political crises in Zamfara, recalling how the APC lost major electoral victories in 2019 following Supreme Court judgments that nullified its wins over flawed primary processes.
The APC chieftain called on the party’s national leadership to urgently intervene, restore internal democracy, and ensure transparency in the selection of candidates.
He further vowed to challenge his exclusion in court if necessary, insisting that due process must be upheld within the party.
