The Delta State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly purchasing a firearm through Snapchat, in a case that underscores growing concerns about the misuse of social media platforms for criminal activities.
The incident reportedly occurred on 13 April 2026. According to reports, the suspect acquired a prohibited Beretta pistol from a vendor on the platform for ₦450,000.
Police authorities disclosed that the suspect claimed the weapon was intended for self-protection against “unknown gunmen”. However, this justification was rejected, as possession of such a restricted firearm without proper authorisation is unlawful.
Beyond the arrest, the case highlights broader concerns about the increasing use of encrypted and semi-private digital platforms to facilitate arms trafficking and other illicit trades.
Law enforcement agencies are increasingly faced with the challenge of criminals exploiting the anonymity offered by social media to evade traditional detection methods.
Security analysts warn that this trend points to a deeper structural issue in cybersecurity and policing, where technological advancements are outpacing regulatory and enforcement frameworks. They stress the need for stronger digital monitoring systems, improved cooperation between platforms, and greater public awareness of online criminal tactics.
Ultimately, the incident goes beyond a single suspect. It reflects a shifting crime landscape in which social media is not only a tool for communication, but increasingly a marketplace and, in some cases, a shield for illegal activity.
