Defence Minister Calls for Compulsory Military Training for Nigerians

By Sunday Ameh

The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has proposed that all Nigerians should undergo military training to gain a better understanding of the demands and responsibilities of serving the country.

Musa made the proposal while speaking on the African Leadership Podcast with Ken Giami, where he explained that exposure to military training could give citizens a different perspective on life and the sacrifices involved in national defence.

According to the former Chief of Defence Staff, military training exposes participants to conditions such as hunger, exhaustion, sleep deprivation and physical strain, helping them understand the endurance required by members of the Armed Forces.

“Every Nigerian should be able to go through military training. I can tell you for free, it will give you a different perspective about life,” Musa said.

He said such experience would help citizens appreciate what it means for soldiers to continue carrying out their duties despite physical exhaustion and discomfort.

Musa also expressed concern over negative attitudes towards members of the military, particularly instances where citizens insult or question the need for the Armed Forces.

He stressed that military personnel routinely put their lives at risk in the course of protecting the country and ensuring national security.

The minister said greater public understanding of the sacrifices made by soldiers could help strengthen citizens’ appreciation of the military and its role in protecting Nigeria.
