Afrobeats superstar Davido has intensified a heated social media exchange with Hausa singer Dauda Rarara after responding sharply to criticism over his decision to spotlight Nigeria’s insecurity challenges at a global event, with Rarara’s backlash now widely viewed as backfiring online.
The controversy erupted at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles, where Davido appeared on stage wearing a customised jacket inscribed “Bring Them Home,” featuring the names of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area on May 15.
The symbolic gesture, intended to draw international attention to the victims and pressure for their safe return, quickly gained traction online, with supporters praising the singer for using one of the world’s biggest entertainment platforms to amplify a humanitarian message.
However, Rarara condemned the move in a video statement, arguing that projecting Nigeria’s insecurity issues on an international stage could harm the country’s global reputation. He further questioned Davido’s intentions, alleging that political interests may have influenced the public display.
The disagreement escalated after Rarara’s comments circulated widely on social media, prompting Davido to respond on X (formerly Twitter) by reposting the video and delivering a brief but pointed reply: “Debidooo.”
The response immediately went viral, with many users interpreting it as a sarcastic jab at Rarara’s criticism, shifting public sentiment sharply in Davido’s favour and triggering waves of memes and commentary across platforms.
Rarara attempted to push back with a Hausa expression urging Davido to reconsider his position, but the response was largely met with ridicule from social media users, further intensifying the perception that his criticism had fallen flat.
Davido escalated the exchange by replying in Hausa, directly challenging Rarara’s stance and questioning his understanding of the purpose behind the advocacy.
The online clash has since split public opinion. While many Nigerians applauded Davido for using his global visibility to advocate for abducted victims and highlight insecurity, others supported Rarara’s argument that sensitive national issues should be handled more discreetly on international stages.
The incident has reignited debate over the role of celebrities in national advocacy, particularly whether international exposure of domestic crises strengthens accountability efforts or risks undermining a country’s global image.
