A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Akure has ordered the remand of a 21-year-old carpenter, Anthony Alabi, at the Olokuta Correctional Centre over the alleged killing of a 58-year-old woman, Veronica Olaseni.
The defendant was arraigned by the police on two counts bordering on alleged murder and theft.
However, the presiding magistrate, Temitope Adurota, declined to take the plea of the defendant, citing lack of jurisdiction to entertain the case.
The court subsequently directed that the suspect be remanded in custody pending legal advice from the Ondo State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Folashade Adebayo, told the court that the incident occurred on March 2, 2026, at about 2:30 p.m. in Iboropa-Akoko, located in Akoko North-East Local Government Area.
She alleged that the defendant attacked the victim on her farm after she reportedly identified him during an attempt to steal her belongings.
According to the prosecution, the suspect allegedly stole items including a mobile phone valued at ₦150,000, a cutlass worth ₦10,000, and an ATM card.
The prosecutor stated that the offences contravene Sections 319 and 390 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006, and urged the court to remand the defendant pending further legal advice.
In her ruling, the magistrate ordered that the case file be forwarded to the DPP for necessary action and adjourned the matter until June 6, 2026, for mention.
