The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is reportedly preparing to arm Iranian Kurdish armed groups with weapons and support as part of a plan to trigger a popular uprising against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s leadership, multiple sources familiar with the discussions told CNN.
These talks have been taking place in early March 2026, involving senior U.S. officials in the Trump administration, Iranian opposition figures, and Kurdish leaders based in Iraqi Kurdistan, particularly along the Iraq–Iran border where Kurdish militias are concentrated.
President Donald Trump himself has spoken with Mustafa Hijri, president of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI), and separately with leaders of Iraqi Kurdish authorities about how military support could be provided and how Kurdish fighters could be used in a potential ground operation inside western Iran.
The reported why behind the plan is strategic: by arming Kurdish forces to engage Iranian security units, U.S. officials hope to stretch Tehran’s military resources and “pin down” regime forces, creating space for unarmed Iranian protesters to mobilize more safely and escalate internal pressure on the government.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has already responded with drone strikes against Kurdish positions, highlighting the volatility of the situation.
