CCB Investigation Raises More Trouble for OSOPADEC Secretary and Directors

  • Netizens Demand Suspension of OSOPADEC Officials
  • Accusations Against Aiyedatiwa Fuel Public Outcry

The ongoing investigation by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) into allegations of financial impropriety within the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) has brought renewed scrutiny to the commission’s secretary, Mrs. Abike Bayo-Ilawole, and two other directors, with many calling for their suspension.

This follows disturbing revelations about the alleged diversion of ₦463 million from project accounts to personal accounts, raising significant concerns among residents and stakeholders.

Leaked documents have surfaced, indicating that OSOPADEC has been embroiled in a scandal involving the diversion of substantial funds, including transfers to the accounts of the secretary’s father and other staff members.

The documents reveal suspicious financial activity on the commission’s capital account at Sterling Bank, highlighting significant cash inflows and outflows that have sparked outrage among the public. A query issued by OSOPADEC Chairman Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye accused Bayo-Ilawole of diverting funds, detailing payments to individuals that totalled ₦463 million.

In response to the allegations, Bayo-Ilawole provided a statement stressing her commitment to the regulatory frameworks governing the commission. She declared, “By virtue of my position, I consider it improper to engage in media propaganda… Let me state that I will not compromise the law guiding the operations of the Commission.”

Despite her assertions, Starnews NG reports that public sentiment remains sceptical, with many questioning the credibility of the commission’s leadership.

The current investigation has not only intensified scrutiny on Bayo-Ilawole but has also cast a shadow on governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa himself. Accusations have emerged that Governor Aiyedatiwa, by promoting Bayo-Ilawole to the position of permanent secretary amidst ongoing controversies, is endorsing questionable practices within his administration.

This perceived endorsement has led to widespread criticism, with netizens alleging that the governor is protecting individuals involved in misconduct rather than pursuing accountability.

Social media has vibrantly echoed concerns, with users vehemently calling for the immediate suspension of Bayo-Ilawole and her colleagues to allow for a transparent investigation. Comments from the public have underscored a growing disdain for perceived conflicts of interest, with one netizen stating, “You can’t lead OSOPADEC and then award contracts to your father while diverting funds to his account. This is a breach of the trust placed in you.”

Another commentator highlighted the improbability of the situation, asking, “How can you be a state governor and promote someone under investigation for misconduct? This raises serious ethical concerns.” The sentiment of disillusionment towards the governor’s leadership has been compounded by claims that Aiyedatiwa’s administration is actively obstructing necessary reforms implemented by the OSOPADEC chairman.

As the CCB’s investigation unfolds, the implications for Bayo-Ilawole and the OSOPADEC board remain uncertain. However, the mounting pressure from both the public and the media indicates a clear demand for accountability and transparency, leaving the future of the commission—and its leadership—hanging in the balance.

The concern is palpable as citizens await the outcome of the investigation, hoping it will usher in necessary reforms and restore faith in the state’s governance, Starnews reports.
