Mahmood Yakubu, the former chairman of INEC, has stated that the voter accreditation machines utilized in Nigerian elections do not need internet access to verify voters.
On February 12, Yakubu clarified that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is designed to function offline during elections.
The device keeps voter information stored locally, allowing it to verify and accredit voters through fingerprints or facial recognition without needing an internet connection.
“The machine does not depend on the internet for voter accreditation on Election Day; it operates offline,” Yakubu noted.
He further mentioned that internet access is only necessary afterward, mainly for uploading election results to the INEC server once voting has ended.
Yakubu’s remarks address concerns regarding reliance on the internet and possible disruptions during elections.
His explanation provides reassurance to voters and stakeholders that the BVAS will facilitate a smooth accreditation process even without internet access
