Nigerian disc jockey and actress Dorcas Shola Fapson, popularly known as Ms DSF, has sparked debate after stating that people struggling financially should reconsider having children if they lack the means to provide for them.

According to a report by Intel Region published on October 24, 2026, Ms DSF shared her views during an appearance on the My Unpopular Opinion podcast, where she described having children without adequate financial resources as unfair to the children, their families and the parents themselves.

“My unpopular opinion is broke people shouldn’t have kids. I don’t think it’s fair to the children. It’s not fair to the family. It’s not fair to yourself,” she said.

She cited the experience of a cousin with five children, questioning the decision to continue having children while struggling to meet basic needs such as feeding and school fees.

Ms DSF also reflected on her own upbringing, explaining that she grew up in difficult circumstances and would not want her future children to experience similar hardship.

However, the discussion presented a different perspective when one of the interviewers argued that some successful people emerged from challenging backgrounds and that adversity could help build resilience.

The exchange highlights an ongoing debate about responsible parenthood, poverty and the financial demands of raising children.

While critics may view Ms DSF’s statement as an overly broad generalisation about people living in poverty, her comments draw attention to the importance of family planning and ensuring that children have access to essential needs.

Ultimately, the debate raises a broader question: should financial stability be a prerequisite for parenthood, or can responsible parenting and community support help families overcome economic difficulties?
