President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The development was first reported by Starnews NG, which cited senior police sources and officials within the Police Service Commission as confirming the decision.
According to the report, Egbetokun was directed to prepare his handover notes after a meeting at the Presidential Villa.
He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, currently the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.
Sources quoted in the report alleged that the decision followed mounting controversies surrounding Egbetokun’s tenure, including debates over his continued stay in office beyond statutory retirement provisions and other allegations widely discussed in the public space.
The report also claimed that news of his removal triggered celebrations among some police officers, although no official confirmation has been issued by the Presidency or the Nigeria Police Force as of the time of filing this report.
Egbetokun’s tenure had attracted criticism from civil society groups and commentators over issues relating to tenure extension, alleged favoritism, and legal disputes involving journalists and activists.
Neither the Presidency nor the Police Service Commission has released an official statement confirming the development.
