Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to one of the most remarkable careers in the history of the Argentina national team.
The 39-year-old confirmed his decision in an emotional Instagram post on Monday, saying he felt he had reached a point where he had “nothing more to give” to the national side.
Messi also acknowledged the emergence of a new generation of Argentine players whom he believes deserve an opportunity to represent the country.
The announcement came two days after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. Messi said the death of his father earlier this month also played a part in convincing him that it was time to step away.
“I swear that I always gave my all, not just in the last few years when we won everything, but before as well,” Messi wrote.
“I always fought and gave everything for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you proud to be Argentinian through football.
Reflecting on his long international career, Messi admitted that walking away was painful but said he would continue supporting the national team from the sidelines.
“There’s not much time left, and chapters are closing, and this is one that hurts me deeply. I loved, loved, and will always love being on the national team,” he said.
“Thank you for all the love and support over these 20 years. I’m going to miss hearing you all from the inside so much. Now I’m going to be just one of you, cheering and supporting you from the sidelines.”
This is Messi’s second retirement from international football. He previously announced his decision to quit in 2016, following Argentina’s Copa America final defeat to Chile. However, he reversed the decision and returned to the national team.
His international career ultimately ended on a high despite the latest World Cup disappointment. Messi captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar, finally achieving the major international triumph that had eluded him for much of his career.
He also helped Argentina win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024.
Messi made his senior debut for Argentina in 2005 at the age of 18 and went on to become one of the country’s most celebrated footballers, leaving behind a legacy defined by trophies, records and an enduring connection with Argentine supporters.
