The Benin Traditional Council has declared social media content creator, Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, wanted following his alleged unauthorized entry into the palace of the revered monarch of Benin Kingdom.
The incident reportedly occurred on March 6 at the palace of Oba Ewuare II, formally known as Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolor.
According to the council on Tuesday, Peller and his entourage gained access to the palace without obtaining the necessary approval and proceeded to create what was described as controversial content.
In an official statement issued by the council’s Secretary, Mr. Frank Irabor, the BTC condemned the act, describing it as a serious violation of palace protocol and a desecration of a sacred institution.
“The palace is not a public thoroughfare or a venue for frivolous content creation. It is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin, governed by centuries of tradition, custom, and sacred protocols,” the statement read.
Following a preliminary investigation, the council confirmed that disciplinary measures have already been taken against individuals within the palace who allegedly facilitated the unauthorized access.
A chief implicated in the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while a staff member identified as Mr. Omuemu has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged to court for breaching the peace and aiding the act.
The council also disclosed that a queen who appeared in the controversial content is currently undergoing internal disciplinary proceedings, which could potentially lead to her removal from the palace in line with Benin customs and traditions.
Despite efforts to address the matter internally, the council noted that Peller failed to honour an invitation extended to him to appear before a committee of chiefs investigating the incident.
As a result, the BTC has now publicly demanded that he present himself immediately and tender an unreserved written apology for his actions.
“Failure to comply with this directive will leave the council with no option but to pursue legal action. Relevant law enforcement agencies have been duly informed and are prepared to take necessary steps,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its role as custodian of Benin’s cultural heritage, the council stressed its commitment to preserving the sanctity and dignity of the monarchy.
“While some may attempt to exploit the fatherly disposition of His Royal Majesty, they do so at their own risk. The council possesses the institutional capacity to address such infractions decisively and prevent any recurrence,” it concluded.
The development has sparked widespread reactions online, particularly among followers of the content creator, as debates continue over cultural respect, digital content boundaries, and the preservation of traditional institutions in modern Nigeria.
