Twenty prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and another passenger abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State have regained their freedom.
The victims were reportedly abducted by gunmen while travelling along the highway, with the incident prompting security operations to secure their release.
According to a report on Wednesday, the freed victims have been taken to the Department of State Services (DSS) Hospital in Owerri for medical attention and necessary checks.
Their release comes days after gunmen reportedly intercepted vehicles conveying prospective corps members travelling to their various NYSC orientation camps.
The abduction had sparked concerns over the safety of young Nigerians travelling across the country for the mandatory national service programme.
Security agencies had intensified search-and-rescue operations following the incident, with efforts focused on locating the abducted victims and securing their safe release.
The latest development comes amid growing concerns over the security risks faced by prospective corps members travelling to orientation camps.
The condition of the rescued victims was not immediately disclosed, but they were reportedly taken to the DSS Hospital in Owerri for medical evaluation.
Further details on the circumstances surrounding their release and the whereabouts of the suspected kidnappers were not immediately available.
