Military sources alleged that Boko Haram Insurgents have attacked a military facility with explosives in Borno same day after attacking a community firing indiscriminately on Friday morning.
An unverified number of soldiers are believed to have been killed by militants from the Islamic State-affiliated faction of Boko Haram, known as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), during the assault on a military base in Jakana, located in the Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.
The sources confirmed that the attackers arrived in various groups, making it difficult to determine their numbers. Many Nigerian soldiers reportedly lost their lives, while others fled into the surrounding bush.
“An attack occurred this morning, 06/02/2025, at an Army outpost along Maiduguri/Damaturu Road in Jakana town, carried out by Boko Haram terrorists, resulting in numerous casualties on our side. The bodies have been transported to the 7 Division military hospital in Maiduguri,” stated a senior source.
During the assault, the attackers set fire to armored tanks and military vehicles and seized an unknown amount of ammunition, according to the source. This incident follows a recent attack in which several soldiers were killed at another military base in Sabon Gari, located in the Damboa Local Government Area.
Just days prior to this attack, seven military personnel, including a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel, were killed in an ambush by the terrorists.
SaharaReporters reported that Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed was leading a group of soldiers from Maiduguri to Damasak in the Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State when they were ambushed by insurgents on Monday, January 26, 2025.
Military sources indicated that the attackers employed explosives and heavy gunfire during the ambush.
In addition to the deceased, many soldiers sustained serious injuries, and a number of personnel remain unaccounted for.
Since the death of JAS leader Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has been strengthening its presence around Lake Chad, with its ranks bolstered by the defection of numerous Boko Haram fighters loyal to Shekau.
The Nigerian Army has consistently asserted that the insurgency has been largely defeated and tends to downplay any reported losses
