The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested five suspects in separate operations linked to burglary and the possession of suspected cannabis, recovering stolen household items and other valuables during routine patrols within Bauchi metropolis.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, saying the arrests were carried out by operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU).
According to the statement, the first operation took place at about 2:00 p.m. on August 3, when VCRU operatives on routine patrol intercepted a tricycle at Doya Quarters based on reasonable suspicion.
The suspects were identified as Sadiq Abdullahi, 27; Muhammad Suleman, 18, both of Unguwar Sarakuna, and the tricycle rider, Aliyu Abubakar, 21, of Kofar Gombe, Bauchi.
Police said a search of the tricycle led to the recovery of four boxes containing assorted new shoes, clothes and jewellery, a six-kilogram gas cylinder, a 32-inch LG flat-screen television and a table gas cooker.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired with another suspect, identified only as Nanu, who is currently at large, to break into a residence at Unguwar Sarakuna and steal the recovered items.
The Command said the owner of the house was subsequently traced, while his wife informed investigators that she had travelled to Jos on July 31, leaving the items in her room. She further alleged that some clothing and a gold earring were still missing.
In a separate operation conducted later the same day at about 4:00 p.m. in Bayan Gari, VCRU operatives arrested two other suspects, Mansur Sani, 25, and Umar Muhammad, 30, both residents of Bakin Kura, Bauchi.
According to the police, the two men were allegedly caught exchanging two parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at the time of their arrest.
The Command said investigations into both cases are ongoing, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend the fleeing burglary suspect and identify the supplier of the suspected cannabis.
It added that all the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the VCRU operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities across the state. He also urged members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to assist the police in combating crime.
