The Abia State Government says it has intensified efforts to support vulnerable residents through financial interventions, medical assistance, housing support and other social protection measures.
The State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this after the weekly State Executive Council meeting, saying the government had continued to identify and respond to the urgent needs of vulnerable citizens.
According to Kanu, the administration has approved and disbursed ₦1.2 billion to 81 vulnerable beneficiaries since January 2026, supporting life-saving medical treatment, housing for persons with disabilities, emergency accommodation for disaster victims and educational assistance for indigent students.
He added that Governor Alex Otti recently approved ₦48.48 million for 19 vulnerable persons, covering medical interventions and re-housing assistance. The government also recovered ₦20.9 million in unused funds, which was subsequently redirected to support two beneficiaries.
Beyond direct assistance, Otti approved a ₦450 million counterpart contribution to expand women’s participation in the World Bank Women Empowerment Programme, increasing affinity groups from 3,000 to 6,000 across six local government areas.
The interventions indicate a broader shift towards social protection, although their long-term impact will depend on transparency, proper monitoring and sustained funding.
