Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has questioned the inclusion of ₦6.44 billion in the Federal Government’s proposed 2026 budget for activities related to the FIFA World Cup, despite Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the tournament.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his media office, Atiku described the allocation as “curious and unjustifiable,” demanding an explanation from the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He argued that committing billions of naira to a tournament in which Nigeria will not participate raises serious concerns about fiscal discipline and budgetary transparency. Atiku maintained that the funds could be better deployed to address pressing national priorities such as healthcare, education, security and critical infrastructure.
The former presidential candidate called on the Federal Government to disclose the specific purpose of the allocation, insisting that Nigerians deserve accountability for every public expenditure, particularly at a time of economic hardship.
He warned against what he described as wasteful spending amid rising inflation, unemployment and the high cost of living.
Reacting to the criticism, the Presidency clarified that the budgetary provision was not intended for Nigeria’s participation in the tournament but for operational expenses connected with the country’s obligations as a member of FIFA, including international representation, technical programmes and related football development activities.
Officials also noted that the appropriation covers preparations and engagements involving the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during the World Cup period.
The exchange has sparked fresh debate over government spending priorities as preparations for the 2026 fiscal year continue in the National Assembly.
