Mounting apprehension has gripped the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State following the mass resignation of loyalists of the party’s former national scribe, Senator Iyiola Omisore. This wave of resignations has raised concerns about the party’s stability in the lead-up to the governorship election.
It is worth recalling that Omisore contested for the party’s governorship ticket alongside Mr. Bola Oyebamiji but was disqualified along with six other aspirants. Efforts for reconciliation appear elusive as the Omisore faction remains steadfast, citing that their demand for legislative tickets has not been endorsed by the party’s hierarchy.
In just one week, more than five prominent members of the Omisore group have resigned from the APC without providing specific reasons for their departures. Among those who stepped down are Oladoyin Bamisayemi, a former Education Commissioner; Taiwo Akeju, the Commissioner for Political Matters; Jamiu Olawumi, Special Adviser on Higher Education; and former State Lawmaker Adeyeye Olajide, among others.
The resignations have sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with APC members expressing discontent over the decision of these party chieftains to abandon the political platform just months before the governorship election. Funso Fagbohungbe labelled Bamisayemi’s resignation as that of an ingrate, particularly following his claims of “slavery” within the party. Fagbohungbe pointed out that Bamisayemi served as a two-term lawmaker and was appointed Commissioner for Education by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, arguing that he lacks the moral authority to accuse the APC of mistreatment.
“It is time we take them up for their lies. Bamisayemi served as a two-term lawmaker under Aregbesola; yet now he accuses the party of enslaving members. His origin is the PDP, and now that he returns to his original party affiliation, he should not accuse our party wrongly,” he stated.
While the defectors have not openly declared their next destination, Olawumi was recently seen at the Accord Party campaign media office alongside members of the committee, suggesting a potential alignment with Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election campaign.
