APC Governors Reportedly Seek to Limit Tinubu’s Campaign Appearances

By George Omagbemi

The reported move by governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to limit President Bola Tinubu’s appearances during the 2027 presidential campaign has raised questions that the party leadership should address openly.

According to a report published by The Sun on October 12, the governors are seeking Tinubu’s approval for a campaign strategy that would place them and other party leaders at the forefront of nationwide mobilisation, while the President makes selective appearances at politically strategic events.

The report, attributed to unnamed party sources, suggests that concerns about the President’s political standing in parts of the country, the physical demands of campaigning and the possibility of controversy at public gatherings are among the considerations behind the proposal.

But Nigerians deserve to know whether this is simply a political strategy or whether other concerns are influencing the reported decision.

If the APC governors believe that local mobilisation will deliver better results than an intensive presidential campaign schedule, they should explain that position clearly. However, if concerns about the President’s health or physical capacity are part of their deliberations, the party should not leave the public to draw conclusions from rumours and speculation.

President Tinubu occupies the highest elected office in the country. His ability to discharge the responsibilities of that office is a matter of legitimate public interest. Nigerians have a right to expect transparency from their leaders, particularly when decisions concerning the President’s public engagements attract widespread attention.

To be clear, the report does not establish that Tinubu is suffering from a health condition, nor does it provide evidence that he is at risk of collapsing during a campaign rally. Restricting public appearances, by itself, is not proof of ill health. It would therefore be irresponsible to present such claims as established facts.

Nevertheless, the APC should understand that uncertainty invites speculation. The party cannot expect Nigerians to accept a major change in campaign strategy without asking why it is being proposed and what considerations underpin it.

The question is straightforward: What is the real reason behind the reported plan to reduce Tinubu’s campaign appearances, and are Nigerians being given the full explanation?

The President and his party should answer that question through clear, verifiable information rather than political messaging designed merely to manage public perception.

This is not about demanding that Tinubu attend every rally or travel to every state. No presidential candidate is required to be physically present at every campaign event. Governors and party structures have legitimate roles to play in mobilisation.

It is about transparency, public confidence and the responsibility of political leaders to address reasonable questions concerning the person seeking another mandate to govern Nigeria.

As the 2027 election approaches, Nigerians deserve a campaign defined by clear policies, credible commitments and honest communication. If the APC has a strategic reason for limiting the President’s appearances, it should say so. If there are other relevant concerns, the public deserves an appropriate and truthful explanation.

Leadership demands more than controlling the campaign trail. It demands the confidence to answer legitimate questions.
