The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Nollywood actress, Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

Kareem’s death was announced on Tuesday by her colleague and Executive Governor of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Ogun State Chapter, Owolabi Ajasa.

In a statement signed by the association’s Public Relations Officer, Femi Solaja, on behalf of Ajasa, TAMPAN expressed sadness over the actress’s death and appreciated those who supported her during her illness.

The association also shared a video of Kareem appealing to Nigerians for financial assistance and prayers while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

In the emotional video, the actress revealed that she had been battling the disease for some time and that her family had spent a substantial amount of money on her treatment.

“I’m a breast cancer patient. It has been going on for a while. My family has spent a lot of money; I’ve come to seek help. The association I belong to, TAMPAN, has tried too, but it’s not enough,” she said.

Kareem, who disclosed that she had two young children, appealed to Nigerians to support her with whatever they could afford.

“Don’t allow me to die this way; I have two young children. Nigerians, please help me with any amount you can use to help.”

TAMPAN said it remained grateful to Kareem’s colleagues, fans and well-wishers who contributed financially, offered prayers and encouraged her throughout her medical battle.

“Sadly, despite all our efforts and prayers, Atinuke has passed on and answered the final call,” the association said.

TAMPAN urged members and Kareem’s loved ones to accept her death as the will of God, while praying for strength for her family during the difficult period.

Her death comes shortly after the Yoruba film industry mourned the loss of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who also reportedly died following a battle with stage-four cancer.
