The Anambra State Government has introduced a wide range of entrepreneurial and practical subjects into Junior Secondary Schools across the state as part of efforts to equip students with hands-on skills and an entrepreneurial mindset from an early age.
The new subjects include solar installation, garment making, GSM repairs, agriculture and food processing, plumbing, tiling, POP installation, event management, bakery, hairstyling, make-up, interior design, CCTV and intercom installation, digital literacy, information technology, and robotics. The initiative is designed to expose students to practical learning alongside conventional classroom education.
Speaking at the launch of the programme at Igwebuike Grammar School in Awka, the Chairman of the Post-Primary Schools Service Commission, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, said the move was aimed at preparing students beyond theoretical knowledge. She explained that the focus is to enable learners develop skills that allow them create value for themselves and contribute meaningfully to society.
Ikediugwu noted that modern education must go beyond examinations to encourage creativity, innovation and self-reliance. She added that the practical-based subjects are intended to transform students from job seekers into job creators, stressing that traditional academic instruction alone is no longer sufficient to prepare young people for future economic realities.
Also speaking at the event, a staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Cyril Nwuche, said the introduction of entrepreneurial subjects places Anambra on a path toward economic and social transformation. He explained that integrating entrepreneurship into secondary education would help learners develop practical competence and confidence needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
