Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s claim that he played the decisive role in securing late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in the 2015 presidential election.
Amaechi, speaking during an interview on Arise Television on May 23, 2026, stated that Buhari’s emergence was the result of collective efforts by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), not the achievement of one individual.
He explained that several political actors, party stakeholders, and campaign strategists worked together to build the coalition that defeated the Peoples Democratic Party after many years in power.
The former Minister of Transportation argued that he personally contributed significantly to Buhari’s campaign and nationwide mobilisation during the 2015 elections.
According to him, it would be inaccurate for any politician to claim sole credit for the historic victory.
The disagreement comes amid renewed political debates within the APC ahead of the 2027 political calculations and growing discussions about legacy, influence, and control within the ruling party.
Political analysts believe the public exchange reflects deeper internal tensions among influential APC figures who were instrumental in Buhari’s rise to power in 2015.
