A media aide attached to the office of the Political Adviser to Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has been dismissed after a Facebook post in which he called on President Bola Tinubu to resign over Nigeria’s mounting socio-economic and governance challenges.
The aide, Osborne Ubong Okon, came under scrutiny after the social media post gained widespread attention online, sparking debate and drawing reactions from political observers and supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
In a dismissal letter issued by the office of the governor’s Political Adviser, Okon’s action was described as an act of “disloyalty”. The office stated that his removal was necessary to uphold discipline and maintain confidence within the administration.
The decision has since generated discussion about freedom of expression and political loyalty within government circles.
Reacting to his dismissal, Okon said he was not formally informed of the decision before it became public. According to him, he first learnt of his removal through telephone calls from concerned associates and acquaintances.
He further claimed that his appointment had not been fully formalised, explaining that his engagement with the office was based largely on a verbal understanding rather than a documented employment arrangement.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, Okon struck a conciliatory tone, insisting that he harbours no resentment towards those involved in the decision.
He also reaffirmed his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress, stressing that his views were expressed out of concern for the country’s current situation rather than opposition to the party.
The incident highlights the growing sensitivity surrounding political commentary by government appointees, particularly at a time when Nigerians continue to grapple with economic pressures and increasing public debate over the direction of the country.
