Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that insurgency, terrorism, and bomb attacks have reduced significantly under the current government. Akpabio made the remarks during an Eid-el-Kabir visit to Tinubu’s Lagos residence, where he commended the President’s economic and security reforms.
According to Akpabio, Nigeria is witnessing gradual improvement in security operations, while the National Assembly remains committed to supporting further reforms, including discussions around state policing and strengthened security coordination.
However, the comments have triggered mixed reactions from Nigerians, especially amid recent terrorist attacks, kidnappings, and violent incidents recorded in parts of Borno, Kaduna, Benue, and Kwara states in recent months.
Security analysts note that although military operations have intensified, many communities still face serious threats from insurgents, bandits, and armed criminal groups.
Critics also referenced earlier statements by Akpabio himself linking rising insecurity to political attempts to destabilise Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
The debate reflects the growing national divide over whether Nigeria’s security situation is genuinely improving or whether many citizens remain trapped in fear despite official assurances from government leaders.
