A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has attributed the economic hardship and worsening insecurity in Nigeria to poor leadership and anti-people policies, insisting that the country needs a new direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The factional leader of the group, Oladipo Olaitan, made the remarks on Saturday in Bauchi while delivering a goodwill message during the presidential primary election of the Social Democratic Party.
Olaitan said Nigeria was facing deep social and economic challenges, citing rising insecurity, unemployment, poverty and the soaring cost of living as evidence that many citizens were struggling to survive.
According to him, persistent cases of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and communal clashes had made life unsafe for many Nigerians.
He maintained that the country’s hardship was a result of wrong leadership decisions and policies that prioritised profit and market forces above the welfare of ordinary citizens.
Olaitan also accused the government of weakening opposition parties and undermining the country’s multi-party democratic system through political divisions and factionalisation.
He argued that the major divide in Nigeria was not based on ethnicity or religion, but between the ruling elite and the masses dealing with economic hardship.
The Afenifere leader called for people-oriented economic policies focused on job creation, support for local industries, improved infrastructure, affordable healthcare and quality education.
He further described the SDP as a party built on social justice and equity, urging party delegates to elect leaders capable of restoring hope and prosperity to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
