In an unprecedented decision, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and awarded the trophy to Morocco, following a dramatic appeal ruling delivered on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
The controversy stems from the AFCON final played on January 18, 2026, in Rabat, Morocco, where Senegal initially won 1–0 after extra time. However, the match was marred by chaos after Senegal’s players walked off the pitch in protest over a late penalty awarded to Morocco.
CAF’s Appeals Board ruled that the walk-off violated tournament regulations, specifically provisions that consider leaving the field without authorization as a forfeiture offense. As a result, the final score was overturned and recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of Morocco, effectively handing them the title.
The decision has sparked outrage in Senegal, with football authorities describing it as unjust and confirming plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
This ruling marks one of the most controversial moments in African football history, raising serious questions about discipline, officiating, and governance within CAF competitions.
