ADC Threatens Amnesty Petition Over El-Rufai’s Continued Detention

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over the continued detention of Nasir El-Rufai, warning that it may petition Amnesty International and other human rights organisations if he is not released or formally charged.

El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State and ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has reportedly been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February 19. This followed his earlier release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi described the detention as “illegal and unconstitutional,” alleging that efforts were being made to pressure El-Rufai into abandoning his political affiliations.

The party criticised what it called a violation of constitutional rights, including the right to liberty, fair hearing, and political participation. It argued that holding El-Rufai for over 30 days without formal charges or arraignment undermines democratic principles.

According to the ADC, El-Rufai had honoured an invitation by the EFCC in good faith, but was subsequently re-arrested by the ICPC shortly after his release. The party further alleged that he has been denied adequate access to family members and medical care.

Describing the situation as a “weaponisation of state institutions,” the ADC warned that failure to release or charge the former governor promptly would prompt international action.

The party reiterated its demand for El-Rufai’s immediate release or arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction.
