ADC Set For Adamawa Congress Despite INEC Position

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State has intensified preparations for its upcoming state congresses, calling on members to turn out in large numbers despite a directive from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withholding recognition of the party’s leadership.

The congresses, scheduled to hold this Saturday in Yola, come amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the party at the national level. INEC had earlier stated that it would not recognise any faction of the ADC until the Court of Appeal delivers a ruling on the dispute.

Despite this, party officials in Adamawa have urged members not to be discouraged. They insist the congresses will proceed as planned as part of efforts to stabilise the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an emergency stakeholders’ meeting in Yola, the chairman of the state transition committee, Sadiq Dasin, said the party would resist any attempt to weaken its political standing.

He dismissed concerns over INEC’s position, describing any move to exclude the ADC from participating in future elections as untenable. Dasin also argued that the leadership under David Mark predates the current legal dispute, and therefore remains valid.

The ADC has been grappling with internal divisions in Adamawa, with factions emerging over leadership and strategic direction. Saturday’s congresses are seen as part of broader reconciliation efforts aimed at unifying members and strengthening grassroots support.

Some stakeholders, including Ishaku Abbo, expressed concern over the prolonged crisis, warning that internal discord could undermine the party’s prospects. They also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to edge Nigeria toward a one-party system.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Dasin questioned INEC’s directive for the party to maintain the status quo, insisting that the ADC remains committed to its internal democratic processes.

Other party stakeholders echoed similar sentiments, maintaining that the ADC enjoys strong grassroots backing and will not be deterred by what they described as external interference.

The meeting concluded with a resolution to mobilise members across Adamawa State to actively participate in the congresses, seen as a critical step in repositioning the party ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
