Former African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Baure/Zango Federal Constituency, Balarabe Lawal Daga, alongside other opposition political stakeholders, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina State.
The defectors were drawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and ADC.
They formally joined the ruling APC during a ceremony held in Baure Local Government Area on Saturday, which was attended by the Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda.
Daga, who previously contested the Baure/Zango Federal Constituency seat under the ADC, was among the prominent opposition figures who abandoned their former political platforms for the APC.
The development is expected to further strengthen the APC’s political structure in Baure Local Government Area ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the defection ceremony, Governor Radda described the movement of opposition figures into the APC as a boost to the party’s grassroots structure in the local government.
He attributed the influx of members from different political parties to what he described as growing support for the APC and its activities in the state.
The governor, however, cautioned party members against turning the defection ceremony into a campaign event.
Radda reminded the gathering that political campaigns would commence at the appropriate time, urging party stakeholders to respect the electoral process and focus on strengthening the party at the grassroots.
He also called on APC members to maintain unity and peaceful relations within their communities, stressing the importance of grassroots engagement and good governance.
The defection adds to a series of political movements involving members of opposition parties as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gradually intensify across the country.
