The leadership crisis rocking the Adamawa State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has worsened, with a rival faction rejecting the reported suspension of the party’s state chairman, Jonah Theman Kalpenge.
The dispute, which escalated after reports emerged on Wednesday that Kalpenge had been suspended, took a fresh turn on Thursday as party executives loyal to the chairman dismissed the action as unconstitutional and without effect.
At a meeting attended by state and local government executives in Yola, the loyalists described the suspension as “drama and child’s play,” insisting that it violated the provisions of the party’s constitution.
The executives subsequently resolved to set up a five-member disciplinary committee to investigate members involved in what they described as the unlawful meeting that led to the chairman’s purported suspension.
The committee, chaired by Dauda Peter, has Yahuza Kabiru, Hauwa Musa, Sarah Sunday and Moses Gaji as members. It has been directed to invite Kamalludeen Jibrilla Aliyu, Suleiman Abdulkareem, Andrew Adamu, Abubakar Aliyu and Tufanus Daniel to appear before it at the party’s state secretariat in Yola on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
The renewed leadership dispute has further deepened divisions within the Labour Party in Adamawa, where Senator Ishaku Abbo is the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The latest development mirrors the internal crisis that plagued the party ahead of the 2023 general election, raising fresh concerns over unity within the state chapter.
