The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has warned Nigerians against voting for another presidential candidate in the 2027 election, arguing that doing so could amount to wasting the sacrifices made under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Abbas made the remarks in Abuja on Wednesday when he received the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, a pro-Tinubu support group led by its National Coordinator, Sunday Asuku, during a courtesy visit.
The Speaker said the group’s campaign for Tinubu’s re-election should be driven by verifiable achievements rather than political rhetoric, urging its members to present Nigerians with facts and figures on the administration’s performance since 2023.
He said, “This is a campaign that should be guided by facts and figures. Let people see and feel what the government has accomplished in the past three years.”
According to Abbas, the administration’s policies and programmes should be assessed based on their measurable impact across the country, rather than through political sentiments.
He said the campaign could successfully convince Nigerians to support the President if it remained focused on “wisdom, issues, maturity, and facts and figures.”
The Speaker also defended the argument for continuity, saying the country’s longstanding challenges could not reasonably be expected to be resolved within a single four-year presidential term.
He stated, “In a country where over 40 out of 60 years of its existence were managed badly, no president or leader, no matter how good they are, will correct the wrongs of the past within four years.”
Abbas further argued that Nigerians had already endured the difficult consequences of some of the policies introduced by the Tinubu administration and should not, after making those sacrifices, vote for a government that could reverse them.
He said, “People have sacrificed because of the policies that have been brought on board to solve those historic, decadent policies. People have paid prices for it. So, for us to now pick somebody to discard all those sacrifices and modest achievements will not be justice to ourselves.”
The Speaker described the House of Representatives as an important link between the Federal Government and citizens at the grassroots, assuring the delegation that the legislature would continue to support efforts to explain the administration’s policies to Nigerians.
He said, “I assure you we will continue to be part of the ambassadors that will continue to enlighten the people about the wisdom of continuity.”
The PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, founded with the support of former Niger Delta militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, is seeking to mobilise at least 10 million votes for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Asuku said the visit to the Speaker was intended to appreciate his support for the movement and seek his continued guidance.
He described the group as a grassroots movement of Tinubu supporters committed to securing the President’s re-election.
Asuku said, “This Movement will stop at nothing until we can galvanise nothing less than 10 million votes from our own angle.”
He also maintained that the group was not seeking to operate as a parallel structure to the All Progressives Congress, but intended to complement the party’s campaign efforts.
The movement’s delegation praised Abbas for his leadership of the House and expressed confidence in the administration’s performance.
The meeting was attended by the House Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere; Deputy Leader, Abdullahi Halims; Deputy Chief Whip, Ibrahim Isiaka; and Chairman of the House Committee on South-South Development Commission, Julius Pondi.
