2027: Southwest NDC ‘Broke’ as Chieftain Accuses Peter Obi of Starving Regional Wing of Funds

LAGOS — Severe financial distress is currently rocking the Southwest chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), threatening to paralyze the party’s grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2027 general elections

A high-ranking chieftain of the party in the Southwest region, who spoke exclusively on the condition of anonymity, revealed to Starnews NG yesterday that the leadership in the zone is currently “languishing in suffering” and completely incapacitated from executing basic campaign operations.

According to the insider, the crisis stems directly from the refusal of the party’s presidential frontrunner, Mr. Peter Obi, to release necessary operational funds to the regional leadership

“The Southwest wing of the NDC is completely broke,” the chieftain confided. “We are suffering in silence here. The leadership cannot even carry out basic campaign activities or set up proper structures because Peter Obi has refused to release money. There is a deep sense of frustration among party stakeholders in the zone who feel abandoned by the top hierarchy.”

The financial starvation of the Southwest wing exposes a growing structural rift within the newly realigned opposition party. Critics have long pointed to Obi’s famously frugal style, often characterized by his supporters as “prudence” and transparency as a friction point for traditional political machinery that relies heavily on logistical mobilization funds.

This revelation comes amid broader allegations from former allies like Kenneth Okonkwo, who previously accused opposition leaders of transactional internal politics. While Obi’s inner circle has consistently maintained that public money must be protected for public good and campaign donations strictly accounted for, regional operators warn that starvation of funds could completely derail the party’s ambitions in crucial voting blocs like the Southwest

As of press time, official spokespersons for the national leadership of the NDC and the Peter Obi Campaign Organisation have yet to issue a statement regarding the financial status of the regional chapters.
