A spokesman for the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Kenneth Okonkwo, has claimed that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, was “lured” out of the ADC into the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where he is now trapped.
Okonkwo, a lawyer, made the claim on Thursday during an interview with Channels Television, while explaining why he considers Atiku the leader of the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, opposition politicians had initially united under the ADC after forming a coalition on July 2, 2026, with Obi among those present.
He, however, alleged that Obi later left the ADC for the NDC after being deliberately lured away.
“Obi left for the NDC, where he has now entered a trap because they used the NDC to lure him away,” Okonkwo said.
The ADC spokesman also maintained that the opposition had collectively chosen Atiku as its leader.
He said Atiku challenged President Bola Tinubu to a debate because of his position as leader of the opposition.
“Why did I say that Atiku is the leader of the opposition? The opposition came together to form a coalition, and they chose the ADC on July 2, 2026, and all of us were there, including Peter Obi.
“I can tell you that all the opposition candidates have come together and chosen Atiku Abubakar,” he added.
Okonkwo further argued that the NDC remained, legally, a political association and not a political party, citing a court judgment that is currently being appealed.
