Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has urged northern politicians aspiring to become President to wait until 2031, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete what he described as its two-term presidential cycle.
Yusuf made the call on Sunday at the Kano Government House while unveiling 50 vehicles donated by Niger Delta businessman, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to support political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, Yusuf said presidential power should continue to rotate between the northern and southern parts of the country, with each region having the opportunity to produce a president for two consecutive terms.
The governor said allowing each region to complete two terms would provide sufficient time for administrations to implement major policies, programmes and development projects.
“I urge support for President Bola Tinubu to complete his second term because this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North,” Yusuf said.
He added, “We should allow the South to complete its two-term cycle. After that, power will return to the North in 2031.”
The governor consequently appealed to political stakeholders, particularly in the North, to exercise patience with the current arrangement and defer their presidential ambitions until after the 2027–2031 period.
Yusuf said rotational presidency was intended to promote fairness, equity, national cohesion, mutual trust and a sense of belonging among Nigerians from different parts of the country.
“Rotational presidency is about fairness, equity and giving every part of the country a sense of belonging,” he said.
The governor also appealed to political parties and their supporters to ensure that campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections remained peaceful and focused on issues.
He urged politicians to concentrate on policies, programmes and development plans rather than personal attacks and inflammatory rhetoric.
“Let us focus on issues, policies and programmes and avoid actions that can undermine peace and unity,” Yusuf said.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peaceful democratic engagement, urging political actors to place the unity, peace and development of Kano State and Nigeria above partisan differences.
The remarks came during an event at which 50 vehicles donated by Tompolo were unveiled to support political mobilisation activities in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections. Other reports said the vehicles are intended to support grassroots structures across the state.
