2027: FMBN Boss Nasiru Resigns Amid Alleged Planned Defection to ADC

By George Omagbemi Sylvester

Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, former APC governorship candidate in Kano State and ex-Deputy Governor of Kano, has resigned as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), in what appears to be a major political step toward joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC). His exit is another sign that the opposition chessboard ahead of 2027 is shifting faster than many expected.

The resignation became public on Monday, March 30, 2026, although Gawuna’s letter was reportedly dated Friday, March 27, 2026. In the letter, he said his decision took immediate effect and was in compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive requiring political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down in line with the Electoral Act. The move is tied to reports that he is expected to formally align with the ADC in the coming days.

This is not just a resignation; it is a political repositioning with Kano-sized consequences. Gawuna remains a known figure in Kano politics, and his reported move toward the ADC strengthens the impression that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s expanding coalition is beginning to attract serious defectors from the APC fold. In a state as politically strategic as Kano, that is not a routine development; it is a warning sign for the ruling party.
