The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the promotion of 2,339 of its personnel, with 45 senior officers elevated to the rank of Directors, in a major staff restructuring exercise aimed at strengthening organisational capacity ahead of the 2027 general elections. The promotions form part of the Commission’s 2025 Senior Staff Promotion Exercise, reflecting its commitment to rewarding merit, professional development and institutional stability as Nigeria approaches one of its most consequential electoral cycles.
The decision was taken during an INEC meeting on Thursday, February 26, 2026, and announced in a statement released on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in Abuja. The exercise saw 91 Assistant Directors advanced to Deputy Director positions and 82 Chief Officers elevated to Assistant Directors, while 2,121 intermediate officers across multiple departments received promotions under established public service rules.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said the comprehensive promotions underscore the Commission’s resolve to sustain leadership depth and institutional memory as it intensifies preparations for the forthcoming elections. The move also aims to ensure that INEC’s workforce is highly motivated, professionally equipped and positioned to deliver transparent, credible electoral processes across Nigeria.
