Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar convened a closed-door meeting with prominent Igbo leaders in Abuja, seeking to consolidate political alliances and discuss strategic collaboration ahead of the 2027 general elections. Among those present was Emeka Nwajiuba, former Minister of State for Education under President Muhammadu Buhari, alongside key regional figures and stakeholders.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, March 4, 2026, included influential Igbo political and community leaders such as Chief Chekwas Okorie, Senator Augustine Akobundu, Dr. Osita Oruche, Prof. Onyi Nwagbara, Chief Uchenna Okogbuo, Chief Ralph Nwosu (former ADC National Chairman), Hon. Uzoma Abonta, Hon. Uko Nkole, Etigwe Uwah (SAN), Dr. Steve Nwadiuko, Chief Morris Eboh, and Senator Frank Ibezim. Sources indicate that the session was convened to deliberate on national unity, inclusive governance, regional development, and electoral collaboration.
The gathering also drew attention to Ọhanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, which is currently led by Senator John Azuta-Mbata as President-General, signalling that Atiku sought counsel from both political and traditional Igbo leadership structures. Analysts note that the private nature of the meeting underscores the sensitivity of pre-election negotiations and Atiku’s effort to project himself as a unifying figure capable of bridging regional and party divides.
Discussion points reportedly included economic development, youth empowerment, infrastructure projects in the southeast, and strategies for political consensus, highlighting Atiku’s intent to engage directly with influential Igbo stakeholders in shaping his 2027 political strategy.
