The Nigeria Police Force has rescued 10 travellers following a suspected bandit attack along the Jos–Kano highway, while three passengers remain missing, raising fresh concerns over security on one of northern Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
The incident occurred on Monday, July 27, 2026, near Gadar Tamburawa along the Kano–Jos Road in Kano State, when armed assailants reportedly ambushed a commercial vehicle conveying passengers between Plateau and Kano states.
The attackers attempted to abduct occupants before police operatives swiftly responded to distress calls and engaged the gunmen in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
According to the Kano State Police Command, officers successfully repelled the attack and rescued 10 victims, while efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining three passengers believed to have been taken into nearby bushes by the fleeing suspects.
The Police Command said security operatives have launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving tactical units and local security volunteers to track down the attackers and secure the release of the missing victims.
Motorists travelling along the route have also been advised to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.
The latest attack has renewed concerns over the safety of commuters on the Jos–Kano highway, a strategic route that has witnessed recurring cases of armed robbery, kidnapping and banditry in recent years.
Residents and transport operators have called for increased security patrols and sustained surveillance to protect travellers and restore public confidence on the highway.
