Zenith Bank Plc has confirmed that hackers gained unauthorised access to limited customer information during a cyberattack, raising fresh concerns over cybersecurity in Nigeria’s banking sector.
The bank disclosed the breach in an email to customers on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, stating that the compromised information included customers’ email addresses and phone numbers.
Zenith Bank said the incident was part of a broader global cyberattack targeting organisations across multiple sectors. The bank added that its incident-response protocols and cybersecurity measures were activated immediately after the breach was detected, while investigations are ongoing.
However, the bank reassured customers that its banking services and digital platforms remain secure and fully operational. There is also no indication that customers’ passwords, Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or funds were compromised.
Zenith urged customers to remain vigilant against suspicious emails, text messages and phone calls, warning them not to disclose their passwords, PINs, OTPs or other security credentials.
The incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime and the need for stronger protection of customers’ personal information.
