U.S. President Donald J. Trump has commended the media for what he described as “responsible coverage” following the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner held in Washington, D.C.

Speaking from the White House hours after the incident on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, Trump expressed appreciation to journalists for their handling of the situation.

“I want to thank the press, the media, you have been very responsible in your coverage, I will say,” he stated.

The president noted that the annual dinner, which traditionally brings together politicians, journalists, and public figures, is centered on the principle of free speech.

Despite the disruption caused by the shooting, he suggested the event still reflected its broader purpose.

“It was an event dedicated to the freedom of speech that was supposed to bring together members of both parties, with members of the press and in a certain way it did,” Trump added.

The incident, which prompted heightened security and emergency response, has raised concerns about safety at high-profile public gatherings in the U.S. capital.

Authorities have since confirmed that a suspect has been apprehended, while investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting remain ongoing.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an annual event known for celebrating the role of the press in American democracy, often featuring speeches, satire, and bipartisan engagement.

This year’s edition, however, was overshadowed by the security scare, marking a rare and serious disruption to the longstanding tradition.
