A woman was rescued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, after reportedly jumping into the Lagos Lagoon from the Idumota end of Carter Bridge in Lagos.
The incident occurred in the afternoon and attracted the attention of passers-by, while local boat operators quickly moved to rescue the woman from the water.
A video circulating online shows the woman sitting inside a wooden canoe after being pulled from the lagoon. She appeared disoriented as a boat operator paddled her away from the area.
Witnesses could be heard expressing concern and questioning what may have prompted her to enter the lagoon.
Several Nigerian news outlets reported that the incident appeared to be a suicide attempt. However, authorities had not, as of the time of publication, officially confirmed the woman’s identity, motive or condition following the rescue.
The incident has renewed concerns about the need for early intervention, emotional support and greater public awareness of mental-health challenges.
The successful rescue also highlights the important role of local boat operators in responding to emergencies on Lagos waterways.
