Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has disclosed that he spent as much as $400 daily on Nigerian meals while living in the United States, saying his inability to access local delicacies made his stay abroad challenging.
The music icon revealed that although he enjoyed global success during the period, he struggled to adjust to life without regular access to Nigerian cuisine, which remains his preferred choice regardless of where he travels.
Reflecting on his experience during a recent interview, Wizkid said he became frustrated after spending about two years in the United States because authentic Nigerian food was difficult to find.
According to the singer, he often paid between $300 and $400 every day simply to satisfy his craving for meals from home.
“I only eat Nigerian food everywhere I go. I got bored staying in the USA for two years because I wasn’t getting Nigerian food as much as I wanted,” he said.
“I used to spend $300 to $400 every single day for two years in the US just to have a taste of Nigerian food. I’m a local boy.”
The award-winning artiste said neither international recognition nor his taste for luxury fashion has changed his roots or personal preferences.
“Forget all this Louis Vuitton and Gucci stuff. I love what I love. You can take the boy out of the ghetto, but you cannot take the ghetto out of the boy,” he added.
Wizkid’s remarks have generated widespread reactions on social media, with many fans praising him for remaining connected to his Nigerian identity despite his global achievements.
The singer, widely regarded as one of Africa’s biggest music exports, has frequently spoken about his attachment to Nigerian culture, music and lifestyle while building a successful international career.
