The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, has said that he is actively observing political developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, with the aim of safeguarding and enhancing the party’s strength.
Wike made these remarks on Monday during the 105th meeting of the PDP National Executive Committee in Abuja.
He emphasized that his concerns extend beyond Oyo State, encompassing the overall survival and advancement of the PDP across the country.
Wike expressed his determination to prevent what he termed “vampires” from taking control of the party’s structure in various states and the Federal Capital Territory, urging party members to remain vigilant.
He also addressed the internal conflicts within the PDP, including ongoing court cases and leadership disputes. He refuted allegations that party members were facing threats, asserting that recent legal rulings have diminished such attempts.
The former governor of Rivers State stated that the party must now await clear guidance from the Caretaker Committee, particularly regarding the long-overdue congresses that will facilitate a credible national convention.
Wike encouraged PDP members to engage in grassroots politics rather than viewing the party as a charity, highlighting the importance of mobilization and active involvement at the ward level.
He also dismissed the notion that a political party cannot thrive without sitting governors, recalling that he ascended to power without being a governor at the time, and stressing that determination and organization are more crucial.
Despite the challenges confronting the PDP, Wike affirmed that the party remains resilient and capable of recovery. He urged members to stay united, alert, and focused on rebuilding the party as a formidable opposition.
He concluded by commending the party’s legal and organizational officers, noting that their expertise would be invaluable in navigating the current circumstances.
In related news, the PDP faction has scheduled its national convention for March 28 and 29, 2026, in Abuja, where new party leaders are expected to be elected. This decision came after a court ruling that invalidated the previous national convention held in November 2025.
