Why Nollywood Actors Are Poor – Patience Ozokwor

By George Omagbemi Sylvester

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has sparked a serious conversation about the harsh financial reality inside Nigeria’s film industry after revealing why many actors remain poor despite fame and years of hard work. Speaking in a viral interview circulated by Naija News TV, she argued that many performers in Nollywood are financially stranded because they are paid only once for acting jobs and receive no long-term royalties from the repeated use of their films.

The interview surfaced publicly on April 6, 2026, and the issue is rooted in Nigeria’s Nollywood industry, where many actors work under a weak compensation structure that rarely protects future earnings. Ozokwor’s point was simple but powerful: while actors in more structured film industries continue to earn from reruns, streaming, and syndication, many Nigerian stars are left with one-off payments and financial uncertainty once filming ends.

A fame without financial protection is exploitation in disguise. Ozokwor did not merely complain; she exposed one of Nollywood’s deepest structural failures: an industry that celebrates stars in public but often abandons them in private.
