Abba Yusuf, Governor of Kano State, says his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) is aimed at positioning the state at the centre of national decision-making and securing a better future for its people.
The governor spoke on Monday at the 2026 APC grand rally held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, where thousands of supporters gathered to welcome him into the party.
Yusuf said Kano could no longer afford to remain on the sidelines of national politics, stressing that his defection was driven by responsibility rather than personal ambition.
“It is about placing Kano in a position where it can fully participate in national development and secure a better future for its citizens,” he said.
“With the support of our great party and the cooperation of the Federal Government, Kano State is better positioned to move forward with confidence and stability.”
The governor, who resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in January following internal crises and leadership disputes, expressed appreciation to Vice-President Kashim Shettima for formally receiving him into the APC.
Among dignitaries present at the rally were the governors of Jigawa, Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Yobe and Plateau states.
Also in attendance were Abdullahi Ganduje, former APC national chairman and ex-governor of Kano, as well as Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.
Speaking at the event, Nentawe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the APC, described the large turnout as a sign of unity and renewed commitment to the party’s agenda and President Bola Tinubu’s vision.
