The Presidency has come to the defence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following backlash over his recent description of a political gathering as “noise” and a “street convention,” comments widely linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement issued on Saturday, presidential aide Sunday Dare dismissed criticism from the ADC National Legislators Serving and Former Forum, describing the group as “conspiracy theorists” attempting to distort the President’s remarks for political advantage.
The ADC bloc, led by Nnenna Ukeje, had earlier accused the administration of undermining democratic values and shrinking political space in the country. The group warned that such rhetoric could have negative implications for Nigeria’s democratic system.
Responding to the claims, Dare insisted that the President did not directly reference the ADC in his comments, maintaining that the remarks were general in nature and consistent with Tinubu’s communication style.
He further argued that the opposition’s reaction could be interpreted as “self-indicting.”
“The script is familiar,” Dare stated, accusing opposition figures of attempting to discredit the President, cast doubt on the electoral process, and promote unverified narratives in a bid to gain public attention.
He also rejected assertions that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat, emphasizing that the judiciary remains independent and that democratic institutions across the country are functioning effectively.
According to the Presidency, the opposition party’s response reflects internal challenges rather than any genuine threat from the government.
Dare suggested that instead of public criticism, opposition groups should focus on strengthening their structures and presenting credible alternatives to Nigerians.
He concluded by reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to democratic principles, urging political actors to prioritise discipline, organisation, and constructive engagement in the nation’s political process.
