The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Nigerian education administrator Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.
Dangut, who previously served as the Head of WAEC Nigeria National Office, assumed his new position on October 1, 2026, becoming the 14th Registrar of the examination body. His appointment is for a five-year tenure running from October 2026 to September 2031.
He succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia, who previously served as Registrar of the regional examination body.
WAEC said Dangut’s appointment was ratified by its international governing Council at the 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Dangut served as Nigeria’s Head of National Office from October 2023 until September 2026, overseeing the council’s examination operations in the country.
He joined WAEC in 1998 after beginning his education career as a teacher and WAEC examiner. Over more than two decades with the council, he held several positions, including Deputy Registrar and senior roles in test development, examination security, administration and post-examination activities.
During his tenure as Nigeria’s HNO, Dangut was associated with initiatives including the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, digital electronic marking, examination-paper serialization and the Digital Certificate Portal.
His appointment places a Nigerian at the helm of the regional examination body responsible for coordinating examinations and issuing certificates across its five member countries.
WAEC’s headquarters is in Accra, Ghana, while each member country operates a national office under the supervision of the Registrar.
