Veteran Yoruba actor and Christian minister, Taiwo Adeshina, widely known as Elegbeje Ado, has died after a brief illness, bringing to an end a career that spanned more than two decades in Nigeria’s indigenous film industry.
News of his death emerged on Tuesday after fellow actor Kunle Afod announced the passing of the respected filmmaker in a tribute shared on social media.
Afod described the late actor as one of the enduring figures of Yoruba cinema whose performances and dedication helped shape the growth of the industry.
Although details surrounding his death remain limited, reports indicate that Adeshina passed away on Monday after a short illness.
Throughout his acting career, Elegbeje Ado became a familiar face in Yoruba movies, earning widespread admiration for his convincing portrayal of kings, chiefs, elders and other culturally significant characters.
His popular stage name was inspired by one of his most memorable movie roles, a performance that later became synonymous with his identity and established him as a household name among lovers of Yoruba films.
Beyond the screen, Adeshina was also a Christian minister, balancing his pastoral calling with his contributions to the entertainment industry.
His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans, many of whom described him as a talented actor whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and actors.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced by the family.
