The United States government has announced the sudden departure of Navy Secretary John Phelan, who is leaving his position “effective immediately,” according to the Pentagon.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell disclosed the development on Wednesday, noting that Undersecretary Hung Cao will assume the role in an acting capacity.
No official reason was provided for Phelan’s abrupt exit, but his departure adds to a growing list of senior military leadership changes under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The shake-up comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, as well as the continued blockade of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Recent weeks have also seen major changes within the military hierarchy.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly asked Army Chief of Staff Randy George to step down, while senior officers such as David Hodne and William Green have been removed from their roles.
Since assuming office, Hegseth has overseen the dismissal of more than a dozen top military officials, including the Chief of Naval Operations and the Air Force’s Vice Chief of Staff moves that have drawn attention to the administration’s sweeping restructuring of military leadership.
Phelan, a civilian with no prior military service, was appointed Navy Secretary in March 2025 after being nominated in 2024. His sudden exit raises fresh questions about stability at the Pentagon during a period of escalating international tensions.
